The program explores three magnificent chamber works written in the time of turmoil, whether it's from inside or outside. 

We begin with the very last piece of music that Lili Boulanger wrote in her bed. D’un soir triste is both Boulanger’s de facto musical obituary, and an elegy for the soldiers lost in WWI, while D’un matin printemps sparkles with effervescence and youthful joy. The following is Bax's bitter, terse, and violent Piano Quartet in One Movement. The program wraps up with Brahms's great Piano Quartet in C minor, which overflows with passionate outpourings of frustrated love and emotional turmoil.

An avid chamber musician, Kate has attended several intensive chamber music programs including Music@Menlo, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Taos School of Music and others. Her former group, the Isolde Quartet, was featured on NPR’s From the Top for the 15th anniversary taping in Jordan Hall, and the group also received an honorable mention at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.

“A star in the making,” (Seattle Pi) Jamaican-American violist Jordan Bak is an outstanding artist of passion, energy, and authenticity in the recital and chamber music arenas. A Sphinx MPower Artist Grant Recipient and a top laureate of the 2020 Sphinx Competition, Bak is also a winner and Audience Prize recipient of the 2019 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition, the recipient of the 2019 Samuel Sanders Tel Aviv Museum Prize and the 2019 John White Special Prize from the Tertis International Viola Competition.

Joshua Halpern is an accomplished chamber musician who has collaborated with artists including Itzhak Perlman, Jonathan Biss, Roberto Díaz, Viviane Hagner, and Kim Kashkashian.During the 2019 season he served as guest principal cello of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, including on tours to Germany, Taiwan, and China, and in 2020 he served as guest cellist with the Rolston Quartet.

A prize winner at the J.C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition, Artur Balsam Duo Competition, pianist Min Young Kang has been recognized with numerous awards and scholarships, including the Talisman Energy Emerging Artist Award, Kraeuter Musical Foundation Award, Prix special du Directeur and Prix de Musique de chambre from Ecoles D’Art Americaines de Fontainebleau.

We are also committed to giving back to our community this season in this difficult times.
