The program explores three magnificent chamber works written in the time of turmoil, whether it's from inside or outside.

We begin with the very last piece of music that Lili Boulanger wrote in her bed. D’un soir triste is both Boulanger’s de facto musical obituary, and an elegy for the soldiers lost in WWI, while D’un matin printemps sparkles with effervescence and youthful joy. The following is Bax's bitter, terse, and violent Piano Quartet in One Movement. The program wraps up with Brahms's great Piano Quartet in C minor, which overflows with passionate outpourings of frustrated love and emotional turmoil.

Jan 11 : Lili Boulanger: D'un soir triste and D'un matin de printemps for violin, cello, and piano (1918)

Jan 18:  Arnold Bax: Piano Quartet in One Movement (1922)

Jan 25: Johannes Brahms: Piano Quartet No.3 in C minor, Op.60
